There is no question that the new Common Core Math Standards (CCMS) are different. There is a need to assist students in learning and understanding the important concepts that build the mathematical foundations for future confidence and competence in the CCMS. Our research and findings indicate that the areas that require enrichment and practice are:
To accomplish these tasks our method consists of working with students on their current math coursework while scaffolding the fundamental concepts above that they have missed, thus moving students toward the conceptual understanding that is required for success in common core mathematics.
The focus for these students are those items in Enrichment Area 1. It is during these important years that a strong foundation in counting and number sense must be developed.
In grades 3-11 all items in Areas 1 and 2 are explored and practiced to fluency. These foundational concepts are integrated into the student’s current math coursework thus enhancing conceptual understanding.
